Our Purpose

The Rotary Club of DMAM is recognized as a 501(c)3. Rotary's mission is Service Above Self.

Everything we do is focused on helping those who are less fortunate and blessed than we are. We work on a variety of initiatives throughout the year to benefit both our local community and international initiatives. We typically focus our work on nonprofits that support families and children.

This first group of projects are annual initiatives:
  • Bingo Bash –– our annual signature fundraising initiative was launched in 2022. In just 3 years, we have raised over $120,000 in which net proceeds were distributed to 3 different nonprofits each year. See more about Bingo Bash here.
  • Capitol View Elementary School near downtown Des Moines –– We have adopted this elementary school for many years and have worked with them on a variety of projects.
    • Winter coats for students – an auction of eclectic items are auctioned off at a meeting in November to raise funds for winter coats for children in need.
    • Reading Programs –– members volunteer periodically to read to/listen to students focused on literacy.
    • Landscaping –– have worked on landscaping at the school.
  • Connection Café –– once a month we provide groceries, make sandwiches, deliver and serve lunch for the homeless.
  • Meals from the Heartland –– a volunteer program with a mission to provide meals to those malnourished both locally and globally. Volunteers package meals to be disbursed to those in need.
  • Civitas –– annual event presented by the Multi-club Committee of Greater Des Moines. This initiative was launched by our club in 2018 and now includes representatives from each of the Des Moines area Rotary clubs. Our goal is to conduct an annual educational event focused on a key issue in our local communities. Past annual topics have been mental health, water quality, food insecurity, substance abuse, and human trafficking. Net proceeds are donated to local nonprofits who work in the area of the year's topic. The Civitas event also brings area Rotarians together on one day each year.

Other Local Community Initiatives

  • Annual Grant Program –– Over the years, we have supported many special projects through our club's annual grant program. Each year approximately, 12 - 15 local nonprofits were selected from grants submitted by members on behalf of the nonprofits. This program evolved into the Bingo Bash in 2022 in which the Foundation selected three nonprofits to benefit each year with a larger financial donation, to have a greater impact for select nonprofits.
  • Harvest Academy –– worked with the Academy to provide manpower, mulch, and other supplies for landscaping projects. The Academy takes in men released from prison who have the desire for education to better prepare them for success in re-entering the community. The program has a good success rate, and former inmates living on the premises are assisted in every aspect of the project.

International Projects

  • Polio Plus –– DMAM has supported this Rotary International project for many years. While eradication is near complete, there are still pockets of polio in certain countries.
  • Uganda Maternal Health Clinic
  • Meals from the Heartland –– see above, this initiative provides meals for both local and international needs.
