Vietnam Vet Kent Sovern

Pre-Veteran's Day Meeting: Bike Ride Thru Vietnam

Nov 08, 2024 7:00 AM

Kent Sovern

Kent Sovern retired from everyday work in July 2018 after serving seven years as the State Director of AARP in Iowa.  Since retirement Kent's first duty is as a full-time family caregiver for his spouse who is battling Parkinson's Disease.

During his tenure with AARP, Kent was among a cadre' of State Directors who helped the organization develop a vast array of tools, resources, and programs that support local leaders to build more Livable/Age-Friendly communities throughout the nation.

Before joining AARP, Kent engaged as a servant leader with a variety of associations and organizations in Central Iowa including the Greater Des Moines Partnership, The John and Mary Pappajohn Higher Education Collaborative, The Iowa Parks Foundation, The Iowa League of Cities, and more.  All that is to say that apparently, Kent has a hard time staying in one position for a long time.

Kent, a native of Fort Madison, IA, is a decorated combat veteran having served as an Army LRRP/in Vietnam.  He and his spouse, Phyllis Mumford-Sovern, were active in the Des Moines Theater community as actors and volunteers.

Kent is fond of saying, "I am not a politician, and my other habits are good also."
