Kent Sovern Kent Sovern retired from everyday work in July 2018 after serving seven years as the State Director of AARP in Iowa. Since retirement Kent's first duty is as a full-time family caregiver for his spouse who is battling Parkinson's Disease. During his tenure with AARP, Kent was among a cadre' of State Directors who helped the organization develop a vast array of tools, resources, and programs that support local leaders to build more Livable/Age-Friendly communities throughout the nation. Before joining AARP, Kent engaged as a servant leader with a variety of associations and organizations in Central Iowa including the Greater Des Moines Partnership, The John and Mary Pappajohn Higher Education Collaborative, The Iowa Parks Foundation, The Iowa League of Cities, and more. All that is to say that apparently, Kent has a hard time staying in one position for a long time. Kent, a native of Fort Madison, IA, is a decorated combat veteran having served as an Army LRRP/in Vietnam. He and his spouse, Phyllis Mumford-Sovern, were active in the Des Moines Theater community as actors and volunteers. Kent is fond of saying, "I am not a politician, and my other habits are good also."

Auction for Capitol School Elementary School

DMAM's annual auction raises funds for winter clothing for Capitol View Elementary School students. Over the past four years, auction funds have provided north of $30,000 worth of coats, hats, gloves, undergarments, and snow boots in a fun, fast-paced atmosphere! We can't wait to see what happens this year!

Before taking office as Iowa Attorney General in January 2023, Brenna Bird served as a prosecutor for six years, first as the Fremont County Attorney and then since 2018 as the Guthrie County Attorney. She was elected by her fellow county attorneys to leadership roles with the Iowa County Attorney Association, most recently serving as the Association's President. Brenna has also engaged in the private practice of law, worked in the Iowa Governor’s Office and the U.S. House of Representatives, and taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Iowa College of Law.

Ray Cole is an Iowa native and television broadcasting executive whose career spanned five decades. He has been inducted into the Iowa Broadcasting Hall of Fame, the national Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame (the only other Iowa-born broadcaster on this prestigious honor roll? Johnny Carson!) and the Iowa Business Hall of Fame. Ray was also honored in 2019 with the Robert D. Ray Pillar of Character Award.

Kevin Foley joined the Des Moines International Airport team in June 2008. Following several promotions he accepted the position of Executive Director in February of 2014. Prior to joining the Airport, Mr. Foley served as an Associate Professor of Aviation for the University of Dubuque. His professional experience also includes several key management roles with Dubuque Regional Airport, 1992 – 2000, and a stint as a corporate pilot. Kevin possesses a Master of Business Administration degree as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Management. He is a certified flight instructor and a multi-engine commercial pilot. |

Before joining America’s Cultivation Corridor, Hunt served as government affairs manager for DuPont, leading state-level advocacy, public-policy initiatives, and government-related business collaborations for the U.S. Central region, and throughout the United States.

Having grown up in Pella, Valerie has loved Iowa history her entire life and is proud to now be able to share that passion statewide. She and her husband Kent have three married sons, four grandkids, with another on the way and live on an acreage near Pella. |

Off Site Meeting at Member Businesses

The Rotary Club of Des Moines will not meet at the Holiday Inn. Instead, members are encouraged to sign up to attend a meeting at a member's business as part of celebrating Vocational Service DMAM Rotary style! A few meetings around town will be held simultaneously, so selecting and signing up to attend is important. As usual, breakfast is included!

Dave Hataj is the second-generation president and owner of Edgerton Gear, Inc., a Wisconsin-based custom gear manufacturer, where he has worked for over 35 years. He is a Journeyman machinist, has a BA from University of California, Irvine, a Masters of Christian Studies from Regent College in Vancouver BC, and a doctorate from Bakke Graduate University, developing a curriculum called Craftsman with Character. The course introduces high school students to the trades and manufacturing as an excellent career path, while developing character and soft skills. The U.S. Navy has recently partnered with Dave to expand Craftsman with Character nationally.

CHRIS PORTER is the director of the artificial intelligence program at Drake University and an associate professor of computer science. He is also co-founder of Innovation Profs LLC, a company that provides training and consulting on generative AI. Prior to coming to Drake in 2016, Chris held postdoctoral positions at the University of Paris Diderot and the University of Florida. He received a joint PhD in mathematics and philosophy from the University of Notre Dame and an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Gonzaga University. Generative AI came to the forefront of the public eye in late 2022 with the release of ChatGPT. Since then, many generative AI tools have been released, with significant improvements to existing tools as well as tools allowing for novel applications of AI. In this presentation, I will lay out the state of generative AI in 2025, highlighting the latest trends and focusing specifically on ethical and legal issues raised by these new developments.
