First Hand Tales of Daring U.S. Coast Guard Rescures

Nevada Smith grew up in many small towns throughout Illinois. After graduating from Southern Illinois University in 1990, he enlisted in the Coast Guard and was stationed onboard Cutter Scioto, a buoy tender in Keokuk, Iowa, from 1991 to 1993. He earned his “Wings of Gold” after graduating from Navy Flight School in 1995 and flew H-60 Jayhawk helicopters in Cape Cod, MA; Kodiak, AK; San Diego, CA; Elizabeth City, NC and Astoria, OR. He retired as a commander in 2015 and presently works at Tampa International Airport. He and his wife, Julieta, have two daughters, Catalina (18) and Vanessa (15).

John Walters is the Director of Broadcasting for Cyclones.tv and the radio play-by-play voice of the Cyclones. John is entering his 18th season calling Cyclone football and men's basketball games on the Cyclone Radio Network. Prior to joining Iowa State full-time in 2012, John was the Sports Director at WOI-TV for 16 years. He also spent 13 years at KCCI-TV. John and his wife, Joni, are each graduates of Drake University. They live in Ankeny and have three daughters. |

Mental Health and Self-Care During COVID-19

Each year Dr. Jennifer Ulie-Wells trains thousands of educators, young people, families, and community providers on a variety of school mental health (SMH) topics. In 2013, she founded Please Pass the Love Youth Mental Health Initiative which provides systemic training and support for thousands of educators, schools, and districts across the Midwest while hosting the only school mental health conference in the state. In 2019, she launched the Iowa School Mental Health Alliance, an active stakeholder group with hundreds of leaders. In 2018, she launched an online school mental health program in collaboration with Drake University. She actively engages in national school mental health capacities including the National School Mental Health State Summit with leaders of federal agencies such as SAMHSA, HHS, HRSA, DOE, DOJ, and the University of Maryland Center for School Mental Health. She is a member of SMH communities of practices and the national Family School Community Alliance with scholars from across the nation. She works for Drake University as an adjunct professor. Her research focuses on racial/cultural trauma, self-care, and creating sustainable school mental health systems. |

John Smith was appointed Drake’s Vice President of Alumni and Development in December of 2006. In 2016 John’s title and responsibilities changed as Vice President for University Advancement overseeing Alumni, Development, University Communications, and Community Relations. Previously, John served Drake as the director of development, gift planning officer, associate director of alumni relations and an admission counselor. Beyond Drake, John was the Assistant Vice President / Director of Principal Gifts for Simpson College and; Smith entered the field of fundraising as the Director of Development for the Sigma Chi Foundation, Evanston, Illinois. John received his undergraduate degree from Drake in 1992 in Rhetoric/Speech Communications and his master’s degree from Drake University in 2000 in Integrated Marketing Communications. John is a member of the Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors, Drake Neighborhood Association Board, and the State of Iowa Workforce Development Board. Previously he has served as a member of the Greater Des Moines Partnership Executive Board; Chair, Greater Des Moines Partnership Workforce Development/Education Board; Past President of Des Moines AM Rotary Club, Past President of the Des Moines West Side Chamber, six year member of the Prairie Meadows Betterment Grants Committee, and five year member of Des Moines Bravo Board. Allan Hoover III is the great grandson of Herbert Hoover. Allan grew up in Sacramento, California and received a BS in Civil Engineering from UC Berkeley in 1993. He is married to Michelle with three children (Mary - 16, Andrew – 13, and Thomas – 10). They have lived in many locations, including Chicago, Little Rock, and Omaha, and currently live in a suburb of Denver, CO. Allan worked for Kiewit Infrastructure for twenty years until 2016 on projects all across the country. Allan also serves on boards related to the Herbert Hoover legacy and has managed independent residential real estate investments since 2009. Allan also enjoys golf, surfing, and travelling; however, of the three activities, he is only skilled at travelling! |

Note: Senator Ernst will be joining us on Zoom Senator Joni Ernst has dedicated her life to her state and country, having served in the military for over 23 years and now in the United States Senate. In November 2014, Joni was elected as the first woman to serve in federal elected office from the State of Iowa and also became the first female combat veteran elected to serve in the United States Senate. In Washington, Joni serves on five Senate committees of major importance to Iowans: Armed Services; Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; Environment and Public Works; Judiciary; and Small Business and Entrepreneurship. Joni is focused on growing a vibrant economy and ensuring the government runs effectively and efficiently which means cutting out-of-control spending, reducing taxes, eliminating harmful regulations and balancing the budget. Joni received her undergraduate degree from ISU where she joined the university’s ROTC program. After graduating, Joni joined the U.S. Army Reserves. In 2003, she served as a company commander in Kuwait and Iraq, leading 150 Iowa Army National Guardsmen during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Joni retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Iowa Army National Guard after 23 years of military service. Joni previously served as the Montgomery County Auditor where she worked to eliminate wasteful government spending and protect taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars. As a state senator, Joni fought to balance the state budget and helped turn Iowa’s $900 million budget deficit into a $1 billion surplus. In addition to her work to balance the budget, Joni worked tirelessly to grow jobs and the economy, cut taxes, improve education, and reduce the role of government in Iowans’ lives.

David Young is a seventh-generation Iowan who was born, raised, and graduated from high school and college in the Third Congressional District. He served the district for two terms. David graduated from Johnston high school, then attended his freshman year at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, and transferred to Drake University where he graduated. Shorty after graduation, David went to Washington, DC where he served for seven years as Chief of Staff for U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley. In 2014, David was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and was re-elected in 2016. He served on the Appropriations Committee for four years. He served on subcommittees including Agriculture; Transportation and Housing; Financial Services; and Homeland Security. He has a 100% voting participation record. In Congress, David authored the ‘No Veterans Crisis Line Call Should Go Unanswered Act’, and the ‘Rural Call Quality Act' which helps rural communities receive the same telecommunications services as Iowans in urban areas. David authored the ‘Securing Our Agriculture and Food Act’ law that ensures that the Department of Homeland Security leads efforts in the bio-security of our nation’s agriculture, food, and veterinary systems against agro-terrorism and high-risk events. For 36 years, David Kochel has been in the trenches of GOP campaign politics. Based in Iowa for most of his career, Kochel brings an outside-the-beltway perspective to politics. He spent several cycles studying at the foot of the nation’s longest-serving governor, Terry Branstad. He went on to lead state party organizations in Iowa and Michigan, and then began consulting for clients from coast to coast as the founder of Redwave Communications, a full service consulting and voter contact firm. Kochel has been an inside participant in six presidential campaigns. In 2018, Kochel helped guide the reelection effort of Gov. Kim Reynolds. In October of 2015, Kochel was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, while leading the campaign of former Gov. Jeb Bush. Following his recovery, Kochel served as a Resident Fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics lecturing on the asymmetry of the 2016 presidential campaign. In 2014, Kochel was a key strategist and early backer of US Sen. Joni Ernst, organizing her debate prep and earned media messaging, beating better-funded primary and general election opponents. He remains a senior adviser to Sen. Ernst, working closely with the 2020 campaign on messaging and strategy. Jeff Link works as an Iowa-based entrepreneur, lawyer and communications consultant with a deep background in government and politics at the state and federal levels in the U.S. and abroad. Link’s experience in government, paid media strategy, data analytics, public opinion-research and crisis communications and offers a strong background for clients. Link’s work in campaigns has dovetailed with his experience in government. Link was the first staff member of Gov. Bill Clinton’s campaign in Pennsylvania in October of 1991 while working for Pennsylvania’s Speaker of the House, Robert W. O’Donnell. Clinton secured the nomination in 1992 with his win in Pennsylvania and went on to win the White House in November carrying Pennsylvania in the general election. After successfully managing Sen. Tom Harkin’s (D-IA) 1996 reelection campaign, Link served in Washington, D.C. as Sen. Harkin’s Chief of Staff from 1997 until 1999. In 1999 Link returned to Iowa to obtain his law degree from Drake University. He graduated in 2002 with honors and won the National Moot Court Championship in New York City in 2001. During law school, Link founded Link Strategies, served as the Gore-Lieberman 2000 state director in Iowa which defeated George Bush by 4,144 votes out of 1.3 million cast. Link also led Gore’s efforts from 1997-2000 to win the Iowa Caucus and secure the nomination against Sen. Bill Bradley (D-NJ). Link managed Senator Harkin’s 2002 reelection campaign while finishing law school in May of 2002. Senator Harkin was reelected to a fourth term in November 2002. In 2008 Link served as Deputy Director of Paid Media and Research to the Obama for America Campaign. In that role, he coordinated all paid media and polling in 25 states including seven battleground states (VA, NC, FL, CO, NM, NV, MT). President Obama won 6 of these 7 battleground states in 2008. In addition to directing the message development through polling, focus groups, web tests and ad testing in these target states, he directed the advertising strategy and media mix with TV and cable buys, created state-specific ads, direct mail and collateral materials. Also, Link managed the Spanish language messaging for the campaign through advertising, polling and focus groups.

Cundy previously served as the Assistant Vice President for Nursing and Care Coordination at UnityPoint Health – Des Moines. She has 22 years of nursing leadership experience, including nursing roles in med/surg, critical care, emergency medicine, dialysis and academia. Cundy earned a Diploma in Nursing from Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux Falls, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Huron University in South Dakota and Master of Science with a focus on nursing education from South Dakota State University. She is also a Board-Certified Nurse Executive by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and completed the Executive Fellowship in Healthcare Innovation Leadership at Arizona State University and was named a Top 100 Great Iowa Nurse in 2015.

It's Our Foundation - Past, Present and Future

A Rotarian since 1989, Chris was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Iowa City A.M., its treasurer for 8 years and club president 2000-01. Chris’s Rotary focus has been international in both scope and action. At the club level Chris has been the club’s Youth Exchange Officer and Youth Exchange Counselor and the club’s counselor to four Ambassadorial Scholars and the club’s inbound GSE team liaison. Both he and Vernette participated in the IowaMOST (Iowa Miles of Smiles – cleft-lip and cleft-palate surgeries Team) to Guatemala. Vernette, has been a Rotarian since 2013 has been actively engaged in all of these activities since 1990. To date, these two Rotarians have hosted 8 exchange students. Chris and Vernette are Rotary Foundation Major Donors, Paul Harris Fellows and members of the Paul Harris Society. In 1991, Chris became a “member for life” of the district’s Youth Exchange Committee. He has served as District 6000 Treasurer and is currently on the district’s RYLA committee and Iowa RYLA Board. Iowa RYLA is a joint District 5970-6000 one-week RYLA experience. From 2006 to 2014 he led the district’s Youth Exchange Committee. He also served a year as an Assistant Governor. Chris was the 2016-2017 District Governor for District 6000. He has now accepted a three-year appointment as the chair of the District 6000 Foundation Committee 2018–2021. Outside of District 6000 he became president of South Central Rotary Youth Exchange (SCRYE) 2020-2021. Chris is the chair of the 2020-2021 NC PETS Executive Committee. Chris is a member of the board of directors of Rag4Clubfoot. |

Kerty Levy is the Managing Director of the Techstars Iowa Accelerator, part of Techstars, the worldwide network that helps entrepreneurs succeed. Prior to joining Techstars, Kerty worked with startups and small businesses as entrepreneur in residence and interim director of the Iowa AgriTech Accelerator and as founder of KNLWorks, a small business advisory.
Prior to that she spent nine years with Kemin Industries as corporate vice president and president of an intrapreneurial venture within Kemin. She was also president of the Downtown Community Alliance, focusing on Des Moines core business district economic development. Earlier in her career, Kerty held roles as product manager and business development manager with startups in the e-learning space, she has also been a management consultant with BCG in the US and Technomic Consultants in Hong Kong. She loves languages and enjoys speaking Mandarin Chinese and Swedish. She serves on multiple boards including the Des Moines Airport Authority, ACS Ltd., Riley Resource Group, BioBag Americas and LBS. She retired this year from the board of Mercy Hospital.
Kerty has two daughters who are away at school. She and her husband reside in Des Moines, Iowa, where they enjoy rowing on the Des Moines River as well as running and skate skiing in the woods.
